Apple will adopt RCS to improve text transmission experience with Android devices.
Apple to Embrace RCS for Enhanced Text Transmission on Android Devices
【Mobile China News】After years of persuasion from Google, Apple plans to adopt the Rich Communication Services (RCS) standard. An Apple spokesperson told the media that Apple will start supporting RCS from next year.
Apple stated, “Later next year, we will add support for the RCS Universal Profile, which is currently published by the GSM Association. We believe that the RCS Universal Profile will provide a better interoperability experience compared to SMS or MMS. This will be used alongside iMessage, which will continue to provide the best and most secure messaging experience for Apple users.”
RCS is a communication protocol adopted by Google. Global smartphone manufacturers and carriers have embraced RCS, but Apple has been resisting its adoption. Google has been pushing Apple to accept RCS through a long-term promotional campaign involving ads, websites, and social media pressure.

Compared to the MMS and SMS standards Apple uses for text messaging, RCS supports higher resolution photos and videos, audio messages, and larger file sizes. It also enhances encryption for chats between iPhone and Android users, cross-platform emoji transmission, and increases the reliability of group chats across different devices.
With RCS, real-time typing indicators, read receipts, better photos and videos, and significantly improved group chats will become standard features for iPhones and Android phones, putting an end to some of the inconveniences iPhone users face when trying to communicate with Android smartphone users. Apple claims that while RCS improves the security of cross-device message delivery, it is not as secure as iMessage.
According to Apple, RCS will offer users the option to share their location with others in a text thread as well as through SMS, and like iMessage, RCS can be used through Wi-Fi in addition to cellular networks.
As early as September 2022, Apple CEO Tim Cook stated that adopting RCS was not a priority for Apple. “I haven’t heard our users asking us to put a lot of energy there,” he said. It is currently unclear why Apple has changed its stance, but the company is facing regulatory scrutiny in several countries over the App Store, iMessage, and other proprietary technologies. Therefore, adopting RCS can be seen as a willingness to collaborate with other companies to improve device interoperability.
