Apple’s self-developed 5G chip release will be delayed until 2025, so they are currently still using Qualcomm
Apple's 5G chip release delayed until 2025, currently using Qualcomm
【PhoneAuto News】Although Apple has always used its own A-series chips in iPhone smartphones, the 5G modem in it is still provided by Qualcomm. Earlier, there were reports that Apple originally planned to release the fourth-generation iPhone SE in 2024 and equip it with the first Apple-designed 5G modem. However, it now appears that Apple’s plan will be delayed.
Qualcomm released a statement this month confirming that they have renewed an agreement with Apple to continue providing baseband chips for iPhones until the end of 2025. This may mean that Apple’s independently designed 5G modem will not be ready until at least 2025.
In 2018, Apple initiated the in-house 5G baseband project and spent $1 billion in 2019 to acquire Intel’s smartphone chip business to accelerate the project. They initially planned to use it in this year’s iPhone 15 series. Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon stated in an interview at MWC 2023 that Apple plans to introduce in-house 5G baseband in 2024. However, it now seems that Apple’s plan has encountered obstacles, and the development difficulty of the modem seems to be greater than that of the self-developed Arm architecture chip.

There were reports as early as October last year that Apple’s 5G chip technology has been developed and was originally planned to be launched in 2023, but due to lower-than-expected power consumption and efficiency, the release has been delayed until after 2025. The new 5G modem chip is expected to adopt TSMC’s 4nm process and will be used in the iPhone 17 series.
