Apple's progress in self-developed 5G baseband has encountered obstacles and it may be launched alongside the development of the 6G plan
【PhoneAuto News】Recently, a digital blogger revealed that the progress of Apple’s iPhone 5G baseband is not going smoothly. In addition to the iPhone 15 series + Snapdragon X70, the iPhone from 2024 to 2026 will continue to use the Snapdragon 5G baseband. According to the blogger, some domestic manufacturers are also developing their own 4G/5G baseband, but Qualcomm’s baseband communication patents are too strong. Except for Huawei, everyone else will encounter obstacles. The AP+external BP solution is not favored.
The blogger also mentioned that the year 2026 is interesting because the 6G standard will be announced and start to be implemented during that time period, leading to another round of competition for market share. In other words, even if Apple successfully develops the iPhone 5G baseband, it will already be outdated. However, self-developed 5G baseband is of great significance to Apple. If a breakthrough is achieved, it means that Apple will no longer rely on Qualcomm for 6G baseband.

According to reports, on September 11th local time, the American chip manufacturer Qualcomm announced on its official website that it has reached a chip supply agreement with Apple. It will continue to provide Snapdragon 5G baseband chips for the iPhones to be launched by Apple in 2024, 2025, and 2026.
However, according to foreign media AppleInsider, Apple is expected to launch its own 5G baseband product as early as 2025. Therefore, it is possible that the iPhone released in 2026 will use both Apple and Snapdragon 5G basebands. In other words, this is an insurance policy that Apple has purchased for itself. If Apple still hasn’t developed its own 5G baseband by 2026, it can still use Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 5G baseband.
