Audi may release special edition R8 as a farewell to classic sports car

【phoneauto News】The Audi R8 is a highly acclaimed supercar and has been the flagship model of the Audi brand since its launch in 2006. However, with the rise of electric and hybrid cars, the days of the Audi R8 seem to be numbered.

According to reports, Audi plans to discontinue the R8 in 2024 and replace it with a new electric supercar. As the R8 is about to exit the stage of history, Audi has not given up its love and innovation for this model. Recently, Audi posted a video on its official Instagram account, hinting at the launch of a special edition R8. The car will be officially unveiled on September 12th.

From the images released, it can be seen that this Audi R8 features a special camouflage composed of red, black, and silver rectangles. There is a small rear wing of the Audi Sport brand at the back. From the images released by Audi, apart from the paint job, the car seems to have no significant differences in appearance compared to the current version of the R8. However, Audi hinted on Instagram that there may be different models appearing at that time, but did not provide specific details.

Previously, there were rumors that Audi would transform the R8 into a pure electric sports car and give it a completely different exterior design from the fuel version. The new car may use the same platform as the electric version of the Porsche 718 Boxster. However, Lamborghini, which is also preparing for electrification, does not intend to share platforms with Audi and Porsche. Due to the substantial profits gained from the Urus, there are reports that Lamborghini plans to independently develop its own platform for future electrification.
