BMW announces a recall of the old 5 series PHEV plug-in hybrid due to safety risks.

BMW Issues Safety Recall for Previous Model of 5 Series PHEV Plug-In Hybrid

[PhoneAuto News] On October 31st, PhoneAuto learned that BMW Brilliance Automotive Ltd. and BMW (China) Automotive Trading Co., Ltd. have filed a recall plan with the State Administration for Market Regulation in accordance with the “Regulations on the Management of Recalls of Defective Automobile Products” and the “Implementation Measures for the Regulations on the Management of Recalls of Defective Automobile Products”. They have decided to recall the following vehicles.

Starting from January 12, 2024, they will recall a total of 41,446 units of the 5 Series Plug-in Hybrid vehicles produced from December 11, 2017, to December 7, 2019. Due to design reasons, there may be relative displacement of the internal batteries in the dual-cell module of the high-voltage battery, resulting in an insulation failure. At this time, the high-voltage system will shut down and the fault light will illuminate, along with a fault message. However, the engine will continue to function normally. In extreme cases, if the battery cells come into contact with the battery casing, the risk of thermal runaway cannot be ruled out, posing a safety hazard. BMW Brilliance Automotive Ltd. will replace all four dual-cell modules of the high-voltage battery free of charge for the vehicles within the scope of this recall to eliminate the safety hazard.

Starting from today, they will recall a total of 4,519 units of the imported 7 Series vehicles produced from October 13, 2022, to January 26, 2023. The vehicles within the scope of this recall may experience wear and loosening at the connection between the wiper arm and the shaft due to the oversolid material of the wiper arm, resulting in the wiper not working properly and affecting the driver’s visibility, posing a safety hazard. BMW (China) Automotive Trading Co., Ltd. will inspect the wiper arms of the vehicles within the scope of this recall free of charge and replace them if necessary to eliminate the safety hazard.
