【Mobile China】One set of data shows that the global myopia rate is as high as 22%. According to the population of 7.6 billion, the number of myopic individuals reaches 1.67 billion, which is a huge number. In China, the myopia rate among teenagers is even higher at 52.7%. Many young children are already wearing glasses in elementary school. In fact, when we observe carefully, we will find that a large number of classmates during school and colleagues after work wear glasses, with varying degrees of vision problems.
When asked about the reasons for myopia, the answers are basically two: one is long hours of intense study, combined with improper study habits; the other is excessive reliance on electronic devices, such as the blue light and flickering screens of smartphones, computers, and tablets, which are also major causes of myopia. Take my classmates from when I was in school as an example. At that time, they were addicted to reading novels. After evening self-study, they would hide under the covers and read novels for two hours. Unexpectedly, within less than a month, they developed myopia. This is something we had never expected. Indeed, myopia has become a very common problem, not only on an individual level, but also as a social issue.
In recent years, we have seen manufacturers of smartphones, computers, and other devices promoting eye-protection functions. Through comprehensive research and development, their goal is to create eye-protection screens for billions of users. After years of dedicated efforts, Honor has become a global leader in eye protection. Since its independence in 2020, it has invested heavily in screen technology research and development for three consecutive years, with R&D expenses exceeding 1 billion, and has obtained more than 500 display-related patents. At present, it has established a complete ecosystem for screen display. On November 16, Honor, together with Beijing Tongren Hospital, Shanghai Eye Disease Prevention and Treatment Center, China National Institute of Standardization, and TUV Rheinland, established the Honor Oasis Eye-protection Laboratory, aiming to create an eye-protection oasis for global consumers.

In the intensely competitive smartphone market today, the “quick gain” style of innovation is highly regarded by manufacturers because it resonates strongly with consumers. However, eye protection, which requires long-term use to be perceived, has become a collective weakness for manufacturers. Honor has recognized this situation and embarked on continuous innovation in eye protection. Such a technological journey precisely requires Honor’s long-termist philosophy. Otherwise, it is easy to give up halfway.
In 2021, Honor introduced its first digital series product after independence – the Honor 50 series. It pioneered the 1920Hz high-frequency PWM dimming, which stood out among the fierce competition among flagship phones at that time.
In 2022, the Honor Magic4 series debuted the 1920Hz PWM high-frequency dimming LTPO screen, combining eye protection, smoothness, and power saving. Once again, users experienced a new level of excellence. In the same year, the Honor Magic Vs became the first smartphone to win the VICO A+ Comfort Certification, supporting natural light eye protection and sleep display. Honor sought eye protection answers from nature and the human body, providing users with deeper eye health protection.
In 2023, the Honor Magic5 series debuted the Germany TUV Rheinland friendly rhythm certification and 2160Hz high-frequency PWM dimming. In the same year, the Honor 90 series globally launched the risk-free dimming eye protection screen, with a 3840Hz ultra-high-frequency PWM dimming that further reduced the harmful effects of flickering on the eyes. To date, Honor is the only brand in the industry doing 3840Hz ultra-high-frequency PWM dimming. Additionally, Honor possesses multiple pioneering eye protection technologies and over 100 eye protection patents, offering the industry a high-standard eye protection benchmark.
Data shows that user awareness of eye protection has significantly increased in the past two years, with a surge in social media browsing of “eye protection” content by 247% and a 135% increase in the amount of related content. A wave of nationwide eye protection trend is quietly rising. It is precisely through years of technological exploration and product accumulation that Honor smartphones have gained a significant reputation for eye protection. As “eye protection” has become a hot search term on the internet, Honor is being frequently searched by users. In a way, Honor smartphones are synonymous with eye protection.
For Honor, as research and development deepens, the study of eye protection technology from a human factors perspective remains an unexplored area in the field of healthy displays. Additionally, the consistency of eye protection experiences across various terminal forms such as smartphones, tablets, smart screens, foldable screens, and laptops has raised higher demands for standardization. Therefore, Honor has found a new direction for eye protection. Moving forward, Honor will use screen technology as the foundation, and human factors experience as the goal to create personalized, professional, and standardized healthy displays. This will be an important step for Honor to reach more users and establish global standards.
First of all, to achieve the humanization of eye protection, reduce eye damage caused by screen design, and achieve low blue light, no flicker, no glare, and zero color difference. At the same time, it is also necessary to continuously innovate based on interaction scenarios, targeting teenagers, middle-aged and elderly people, sleep and office workers. Secondly, professional eye protection, the screen displays simulated natural light. Currently, the natural light eye protection feature on many Honor products has been highly praised, effectively relieving eye fatigue and ensuring eye health. In addition, professional eye protection should also incorporate the achievements of professional medical clinical verification and engage in in-depth cooperation with hospitals and other professional institutions to bring professional and valuable eye protection innovations. Finally, standardized eye protection, corresponding eye protection display specifications need to be established to drive the entire industry’s eye protection efforts.
Honor’s layout for future eye protection technology has gained high recognition from its partners. Representatives from the China National Institute of Standardization Research believe that Honor’s long-term exploration of eye protection technology is conducive to the continuous improvement of industry standards and look forward to more manufacturers participating in the promotion of eye protection screens. Representatives from TÜV Rheinland in Germany highly appreciate Honor’s proactive approach to eye protection technology, hoping that Honor’s leading technology can provide an excellent demonstration for the field. Leaders and experts from medical institutions have elaborated on the urgent situation of national eye health issues from a professional perspective, while affirming the long-term value brought by joint efforts in screen eye protection.
Honor’s adherence to long-termism allows them to persevere in the field of eye protection. And in the unexplored territories of eye protection, Honor is at the forefront. As Zhao Ming described their foldable screens, “thousands of sails compete,” eye protection innovation also requires thousands of sails competing to create an eye protection oasis for users. In the upcoming Honor 100 series, Honor has also introduced an eye protection screen, continuously innovating in the field of eye protection experience, and providing a complete set of eye protection solutions for the digital series, creating a green oasis that catches the eye.
