European Commission to investigate water issues at Ningde Times battery factory in Hungary

【phoneauto News】Recently, phoneauto noticed that the European Commission may investigate the automotive power battery factory of CATL, located in Hungary, a European country. According to reports, the European Commission has received a complaint from the Hungarian opposition party, the Dialogue Party, by the political figure and former Member of the European Parliament, Javor Benedek, which will initiate an investigation into CATL’s battery factory in Debrecen, Hungary. The factory’s planned water usage may not comply with the EU’s directives regarding groundwater conditions, but it has still obtained construction permits. This investigation will focus on whether CATL’s battery factory in Europe complies with relevant environmental regulations and provisions.

In August of last year, CATL announced an investment of up to 7.34 billion euros (approximately 57.7 billion RMB) in Debrecen, Hungary, to build a 100 GWh battery factory. Once completed, this factory will become the largest battery factory in Europe in terms of capacity and is CATL’s second overseas factory after the one in Germany. However, the investigation results will have a significant impact on CATL’s investment and reputation in Europe.

According to reports, Javor Benedek submitted a similar complaint to the European Commission in the spring of this year, requesting an investigation into CATL’s battery factory in Germany. This means that CATL’s battery factories in Europe not only face environmental compliance issues in Hungary but may also have similar problems in their German factory.

Against this background, the European Commission’s investigation will further focus on such issues and have an impact on CATL’s business in Europe. If CATL’s battery factories are found to have environmental violations or other issues, it may face serious consequences such as fines or factory closures. This will not only affect the company’s economic benefits but also damage CATL’s reputation in the European market.
