Surprising, right? Even Americans who are passionate about large-displacement engines are now starting to accept three-cylinder cars

Even American car enthusiasts now accept three-cylinder cars

【Phoneauto News】In the impression of most Chinese people, Americans have an unbreakable love for large-displacement vehicles, and “American-style V8” has become many people’s first impression of American cars. However, the automotive landscape in the United States is changing, and it involves not only the cars themselves but also the engines under the hood. Recently, data released by foreign media reveals an interesting trend: three-cylinder engines are rising in the US automotive market, while the dominance of six-cylinder and eight-cylinder engines is slowing down.

Before 2019, the market share of new cars with three-cylinder engines in the United States was basically zero. However, since the first quarter of 2019, the penetration rate of three-cylinder engines has been increasing every quarter, reaching 5.6% by the end of the second quarter of 2023 and approaching 6.2% at some point in the third quarter. According to Tom Libby, Vice President of Solutions and Industry Analysis at S&P Global Mobility, this is because the demand from American consumers for “subcompact” multi-purpose vehicles such as the Buick Encore GX, Ford Bronco Sport, and Chevrolet Trailblazer has been continuously growing.

Market share of three-cylinder engine vehicles in the US

In fact, data released by S&P Global Mobility shows that as of July, the number of individual registrations for new subcompact cars in the United States reached 589,026. On average, consumers who want to buy a subcompact car spend about $462 per month on average, which is $40 more than the average monthly payment for a subcompact car.

However, four-cylinder engines are still the most popular power system in the United States. In fact, their market share has increased to 57.2% in the past year. At the same time, the demand for six-cylinder cars has declined, currently accounting for 26.8% of sales, down from 28.6% last year. The market share of eight-cylinder engines has also dropped from 11.5% in 2022 to 10.9% this year.

Libby pointed out that the decline in sales of eight-cylinder models is largely due to the fact that automakers now offer more powerful and fuel-efficient six-cylinder engines. A clear example is the 2024 Jeep Grand Cherokee and Grand Wagoneer, which have abandoned their previous naturally aspirated V8 engines and now only offer versions with a 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged inline-six engine.
