Foreign media comments Samsung’s decision to abandon the idea of a cheap folding screen phone is wise.
Samsung's decision to scrap plans for affordable folding screen phone applauded by international media
【Mobile China News】Rumors about Samsung developing inexpensive foldable screen smartphones have been circulating for a long time. There are even rumors that the Samsung A series might release a foldable screen phone. Currently, Samsung’s foldable screen phones are only available through the Z series, which are positioned as high-end flagships. The cheapest Z Flip 5 starts at a whopping $999. In response, some foreign media commented that it would be wise for Samsung to give up on the idea of affordable foldable screen phones.

Foreign media pointed out that although Samsung currently dominates the foldable screen phone market with its first-mover advantage, we are now seeing more competitors, mainly from China. When Chinese phone manufacturers enter the scene, fierce competition is inevitable, as we have already seen in the low-end and mid-range markets. In light of this, foreign media believe that sooner or later, we will witness similar competitive patterns in the foldable screen phone field. This is perhaps why there are many rumors that Samsung hopes to launch affordably priced foldable screen phones.
Recently, there have been rumors that Samsung may be developing foldable screen phones in the $400-$500 price range. Foreign media believe that considering the Samsung A54 5G is priced at $449, it seems a bit unrealistic to purchase a foldable screen phone at this price. The foldable screen panel and hinge are the two most expensive components in foldable screen phones, and if Samsung doesn’t compromise on other parts, a foldable screen phone in this price range would not be commercially viable.

Finally, foreign media state that this is not to say that Samsung shouldn’t produce cheaper foldable screen phones, but currently, the technology hasn’t reached that point. It may take several years for supply chain efficiency improvements and component cost control before Samsung considers launching a more affordable foldable screen phone.
