General Motors plans to provide engines for the F1 car of Andretti starting in 2028.

General Motors to Supply Engines for Andretti's F1 Car Beginning in 2028.

【PhoneAuto News】 General Motors announced on Tuesday that they have registered with the F1 governing body and plan to become an engine supplier for F1 starting in 2028. This news is seen as a huge push for Michael Andretti’s entry into the global racing series.

General Motors President Mark Reuss stated that they are excited that Andretti’s Cadillac F1 car will be using General Motors’ powertrain. With GM’s deep engineering and racing expertise, they are confident in developing a successful powertrain for the series and positioning Andretti Cadillac as a true engineering team.

This decision was announced prior to the Las Vegas Grand Prix, where three GM executives plan to attend the race to further promote the collaboration between Andretti Global and F1. In January of this year, GM announced a partnership with Andretti Global and applied to join F1 under the Cadillac name. However, the International Automobile Federation (FIA) only approved Andretti’s application in July, but F1 has not officially accepted it yet.

Some critics point out that GM has not truly entered F1, but is only supporting Andretti because he uses an engine with another brand’s Cadillac logo. Now, GM has decided to manufacture their own engine, which will help the company make progress in areas such as electrification, hybrid technology, sustainable fuels, efficient internal combustion engines, advanced controls, and software systems.

In 2026, F1 has set new engine regulations that emphasize sustainable fuels and greater electrical power. Six manufacturers have already signed with the FIA to provide engines in 2026, including new entrant Audi, which will partner with Sauber. Ford is also planning to return to F1 in partnership with three-time defending champion Red Bull Racing. Honda is also planning to make a comeback as an official supplier in 2026.

Andretti is the only one among the seven applicants who meets all the criteria set by the FIA to expand the teams from 10 to 11 and has already built a car with hopes of competing in 2025. If Andretti is approved to join an expanded F1 team, they will have to use another manufacturer’s engine until 2028.
