Huawei announces seven advanced sports and health technologies, enhancing user well-being with self-developed tech

【Phoneauto News】On August 5th, Phoneauto noticed that Zhang Wei, CEO of Huawei Sports Health Corps and President of Huawei Terminal BG Smart Wearable and Sports Health Product Line, met with the media in Songshan Lake, Dongguan. At the Huawei Sports Health Technical Sub-Forum and HDC Sports Health Sub-Forum, Huawei unveiled its latest seven sports health black technologies for the first time, and announced the latest achievements of Huawei Sports Health in research areas such as exercise and blood pressure health, female ovarian health, and emotional health. Zhang Wei said, “Innovation in professional technology is what we invest the most in and what we have always insisted on. Huawei looks forward to making more efforts in platforms and technologies to bring more value to consumers in the future.”

Huawei has always been technology-oriented, and this is also true in the smart wearable field. Since Huawei entered the smart wearable device industry in 2014, it has been working in this field for a full ten years. During these ten years, Huawei has insisted on independent research and development, and has taken the path of basic scientific research. From Huawei’s first smart wristband in 2014 to the Huawei WATCH Ultimate, the first wrist-mounted Beidou satellite communication device, which will be launched in 2023 and supports audio functionality, is waterproof up to 100 meters, and can withstand diving up to 100 meters. Huawei has continuously made significant breakthroughs in the smart wearable field, and has now entered the “unmanned area” of health, constantly exploring the boundaries of sports health scenarios for wearable devices.

The seven sports health black technologies announced by Huawei this time are the latest innovative research and development results of Huawei. These seven black technologies can be roughly divided into two parts: health black technology and sports black technology.

Under normal circumstances, the first step for patients to go to the hospital is “experience”. Although the hospital experience is professional, the procedures are complicated, time-consuming, and expensive. Moreover, going to the hospital for minor physical discomfort is a bit of an overreaction. Starting from meeting user needs, Huawei has equipped the WATCH 4 series with a brand-new micro-experience function. This function can simultaneously call a large number of sensors on the Huawei smartwatch to complete heart rate, blood oxygen, pressure, body temperature, electrocardiogram, blood vessel elasticity, blood vessel risk screening, lung function evaluation, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease risk screening, and lung infection risk screening within 60 seconds. It generates a micro-examination report on both the smartwatch and the Huawei Health app, completely solving the pain points in the process of testing multiple health indicators. This process may sound easy, but it is not simple to implement. Huawei’s development team has spent a lot of effort to improve the running algorithms, complete the intelligent scheduling of sensors, make the most efficient use of the smartwatch’s computing power and memory, and use a unique memory management mechanism to improve the accuracy of the test results. This helps both the chronic disease population and the healthy population enjoy a more convenient and comprehensive experience of multi-indicator testing, and to do well in health management at all times.

Huawei has also collaborated with the 301 Hospital, Tongji Hospital Affiliated to Tongji Medical College of Huazhong University of Science and Technology, and the First Hospital of Peking University to initiate respiratory health research. This is also the first domestic research to check the risk of lung infection using wearable devices on the wrist. Users can use Huawei wearable devices to detect their own physiological characteristics such as heart rate, blood oxygen, and respiratory rate, as well as cough sound characteristics to achieve lung infection risk screening. Moreover, Huawei has innovatively developed a mechanism for superimposing physiological parameters and cough characteristics, as well as an operational guarantee mechanism, to ensure the accuracy of respiratory health check results. Compared with traditional mouth-blown spirometers, Huawei’s respiratory health research is more convenient and fast, and is more user-friendly for many elderly or people with poor lung function.

Vascular health research is jointly promoted by Huawei, China Medical and Health International Exchange Promotion Association, Peking University People’s Hospital, Beijing Anzhen Hospital Affiliated to Capital Medical University, and other institutions. Through a large number of high-precision sensors, powerful computing power, and innovative algorithms on Huawei smartwatches, Huawei smartwatches can accurately detect physiological indicators such as heart rate, HRV, and pulse wave velocity. After detecting the pulse wave velocity (PWV), Huawei’s “self-developed signal time-frequency domain optimization reconstruction” algorithm can compare the data with health indicators to evaluate vascular health based on the differences in data.

In order to overcome the challenges of achieving blood glucose risk assessment on wearable devices, Huawei’s team specializing in blood glucose research, in collaboration with Nanjing Drum Tower Hospital and Peking Union Medical College Hospital, discovered and designed the industry’s first “high blood glucose fractal algorithm” through a large amount of monitoring data and experimental research. Through Huawei’s advanced ring-shaped sensors and HUAWEI TruSeen5.0+ algorithm technology, it can accurately monitor the signal characteristics of blood vessels, heart rate, etc. caused by abnormal fluctuations in high blood glucose. It is worth mentioning that the Huawei WATCH 4 series, which was just released in May this year, is the first smartwatch in the world to support high blood glucose risk assessment research. It has become one of the most popular functions among consumers after its launch.

Since the Huawei WATCH 4 series was shipped in China only one month ago, more than 30% of users have joined the blood glucose health research. According to the data calculated from the feedback of current users, the diagnosis rate of diabetes and pre-diabetes population and the accuracy rate compared with the gold standard in hospitals are basically consistent. It has had a huge positive impact on the early risk prevention and management of diabetes for users.

Previously, Huawei had innovatively used the BeiDou satellite messaging function on smartphones, and now this function has been expanded to smartwatches. However, there are significant differences between watches and smartphones in terms of performance, resources, and size, making it difficult to achieve the same functionality. In order to realize the “satellite function on the watch,” Huawei has made a series of technological breakthroughs, including miniaturized RF modules, built-in floating antenna design, innovative nano-formed integrated technology case, and so on, ultimately creating the Huawei WATCH Ultimate Master, the world’s first mass-market smartwatch that supports two-way BeiDou satellite messaging. Huawei watches have also become a new security line for hardcore outdoor sports enthusiasts’ communication protection. Use it once, last a lifetime, and safeguard the brave departure and safe return of outdoor sports enthusiasts.

Water seems to have always been the “natural enemy” of electronic products. Although many watches can now achieve 5ATM waterproofing, this can only meet the needs of ordinary users. In order to meet the needs of deep-sea divers, Huawei has adopted 16 waterproof structures and integrated waterproof breathable films and other components on the WATCH Ultimate, creating a more advanced and stable waterproof system, achieving a top-level performance of 100 meters waterproofing, diving, and supporting audio functionality.

Human motion sensing technology is an area that Huawei’s team has been deeply cultivating. Through smartphones and the Huawei Health app, users’ physical fitness can be tested online, and results interpretation and evaluation can be conducted based on user posture image detection, providing recommendations for improving sports and exercise advice. Based on the industry-leading human motion sensing technology and national body movement evaluation methods, Huawei has developed an online self-test platform for national sports exercise standards, which can provide services to the public through the Huawei Health app.

In order to provide consumers with the best wearable products and meet their pursuit of smart health and fitness, Huawei’s smart wearables research and development team has continuously improved over the past decade, keeping the complexity to themselves and giving simplicity to the users. Collaborating with universities and hospitals, aiming for technology and health, they integrate technology and demand to integrate the hardware, software, and service platforms of wearable products, continuously improving the ecosystem for digital health. Finally, in the tenth year since the launch of Huawei’s wearable devices, which is 2023, represented by the seven major sports and health black technologies announced this time, Huawei’s smart wearables team has accumulated rich technical reserves, making Huawei’s smartwatches truly become the wrist-guardian of users’ sports and health.
