iFixit lowers iPhone 14 repairability score due to increased difficulty of self-repair
【Phoneauto News】Recently, well-known teardown website iFixit announced that the repairability score of iPhone 14 has dropped from 7 out of 10 to 4, due to Apple’s requirement of parts pairing after more than a year of iPhone 14’s release.
iFixit stated that when purchasing parts from Apple’s self-service repair store, customers must enter the device’s serial number or IMEI, and any ordered parts need to be paired with the same device after installation in order to function properly. This move by Apple has threatened the business models of many independent repair shops.
iFixit CEO Kyle Wiens wrote, “Most major repairs on iPhones now require Apple’s approval. You have to buy the parts through their system and then verify the repair via their chat system. Otherwise, you’ll encounter limited functionality or missing features, along with some annoying warnings.”

iFixit is referring to Apple’s post-repair system configuration software tool. Apple previously introduced that the tool can “verify Apple genuine parts, update firmware, and calibrate components to ensure the highest performance and quality.” In June, Apple announced that customers who have repaired their own devices can now start the system configuration by placing their devices in diagnostic mode and following the prompts on the screen.
iFixit also outlined various functional issues and warnings that may occur when the system configuration is incomplete in the article. In conclusion, although iFixit acknowledges that Apple has made some progress in the field of repair rights, it has decided to keep the company to higher standards and has accordingly adjusted its repairability scoring system.
