Multiple mobile phone manufacturers have canceled the 5G switch on their phones. Is it another demand from the telecom operators?

5G Switch Cancellation By Several Mobile Manufacturers A Move Driven By Telecom Operators?

[Phone China News] Recently, Phone China noticed that according to relevant media reports, multiple users have feedbacked that after updating their system, the 4G and 5G switch in the system settings has been removed, and they can only use the 5G network by default. It is reported that this may be a unified requirement from the carriers to increase the usage rate of 5G by users.

Multiple Mobile Manufacturers have removed the 5G switch from phones. Is it again due to carrier requirement?

Currently, industry insiders in the mobile phone industry have stated that future phones will also not have the option to turn off 5G. But this has raised questions from many users who believe that the coverage of 5G network is still not perfect and it consumes more power. Whether to enable or disable the 5G network should be left to the choice of users instead of being forcefully enabled by default.

It’s worth mentioning that this is not the first time users have reported that the 5G switch has disappeared from their phones. In 2021, there were reports that consumers discovered the absence of the 5G toggle in the quick settings of their phones, and they could only switch it in the settings. According to information revealed by Li Xiaolong, the Vice President of Huawei’s mobile product line, this change at that time mainly came from the requirements of the three major carriers in China (Mobile, Unicom, Telecom) as they found out that although many users were buying and using 5G phones, the majority of them were turning off the 5G switch.

According to People’s Daily, the Global Digital Economy Conference in 2023 released data showing that in terms of network construction, China has achieved “5G coverage in every county.” As of the end of May this year, China has built and activated a total of 2.844 million 5G base stations, covering all prefecture-level cities and county-level towns. More than 16,000 5G industry virtual private networks have been built to effectively meet the personalized needs of vertical enterprises such as local data storage and autonomous management. The number of 5G mobile phone users has reached 651 million households, accounting for 38.1% of mobile phone users.
