Haval M6 vs JETOUR X70S Which domestic boxy vehicle suits your taste?

Which domestic boxy vehicle do you prefer Haval M6 or JETOUR X70S?

【phoneauto】Nowadays, the SUV market in China has been swept by a wave of ruggedness. Following the success of the Tank 300 with its tough appearance, many manufacturers have turned their attention to this field. Whether it’s Chery (including its sub-brand Jetour) that takes pride in its engines, or BYD, which has developed rapidly in the past two years, they have all entered this field. BYD has even launched a new brand called Fangcheng Leopard, focusing on off-road vehicles.

After other car companies have started to layout the light off-road field, Haval, as the leader of domestic SUVs, has also been busy. On the evening of October 10th, Beijing time, the Haval Long series new model, Haval Mengliong, which has been preheated for a long time, was finally launched. The official price of the new car is 165,800-183,800 yuan, and from the price, it can be seen that Haval Mengliong focuses on the light off-road market within 200,000 yuan, making a good distinction from its big brother, the Tank 300. However, in this market, there is another recently launched model that cannot be ignored, and it is likely to become the biggest competitor of Haval Mengliong, which is the Jetour Traveler. Today, let phoneauto take you through a comparison between the two, and let you know which model is more suitable for you.

Both Haval Mengliong and Jetour Traveler have square and rugged “box-shaped” body contours, giving a sense of sturdiness and durability. Both cars use a large area of black grille at the front, with “HAVAL” and “JETOUR” brand logos in English respectively. The headlight assembly of Haval Mengliong adopts a rounded rectangle design, which looks more delicate; while the headlight assembly of Jetour Traveler adopts a sharp triangle design, which looks more aggressive. Both cars have silver skid plates on the front bumper, adding to the off-road atmosphere.

Haval M4

From the side, both the Haval M4 and Jetour Traveler have a high ground clearance, large wheel arches, and tires, demonstrating good off-road capabilities. Both models feature a floating-style roof design, adding a sense of depth. The side window line of the Haval M4 shows an upward trend, giving a sense of forward momentum; while the Jetour Traveler’s side window line presents a smooth and steady curve, giving a sense of stability and composure.

Jetour Traveler

From the rear, both the Haval M4 and Jetour Traveler adopt a waterfall-style taillight design, enhancing the visual effect. The rear bumpers of both models are equipped with protective plates, echoing the front bumpers. Of course, as a “boxy” vehicle, the iconic small backpack-shaped spare tire is naturally present. However, the Haval M4 adopts a half-covered design, while the Jetour Traveler is fully covered. The Haval M4 also has the “Hi4” logo on the tailgate, indicating its use of Great Wall’s latest intelligent four-wheel drive hybrid technology and its identity as a new energy vehicle; while the Jetour Traveler is equipped with the “XWD” logo on the tailgate, highlighting its intelligent four-wheel drive features.

Jetour Traveler

Overall, both the Haval M4 and Jetour Traveler showcase a rugged off-road style in their appearance, but each has its own unique characteristics. The Haval M4 is more refined and elegant, while the Jetour Traveler is more aggressive and dominant.

For a vehicle positioned as a mild off-roader, the size of the body determines how much cargo the vehicle can carry during off-road adventures, making it a major consideration for buyers. In terms of dimensions, the Haval Bigfoot has a length, width, and height of 4800mm/1916mm/1822mm (with spare tire) and 4680mm/1916mm/1822mm (without spare tire), while the Jetour Traveler has a body size of 4785mm/2006mm/1880mm. With both equipped with spare tires, the Bigfoot is slightly longer than the Traveler, but falls short in terms of width and height compared to the latter.

Haval Bigfoot

Jetour Traveler

As for the impact on interior space, the Bigfoot has a wheelbase of 2738mm, slightly shorter than the Traveler’s 2800mm. In terms of trunk space, the Bigfoot claims a regular cargo volume of 586L, while the Traveler’s official information does not disclose the size of the trunk. However, considering the slightly longer wheelbase, the Traveler may perform slightly better than the Bigfoot. Both models are equipped with roof racks, providing additional storage capacity if the rear space is insufficient.

As competing models, the Haval Bigfoot and Jetour Traveler also share similar interior layouts. The former features a 12.3-inch LCD instrument cluster and a 14.6-inch central control screen, while the latter adopts a 10.25-inch LCD instrument cluster and a 15.6-inch central control screen. The former has a larger display area on the instrument panel, while the latter has a larger-sized central control screen, each with its own advantages.

Jietu Traveler

Haval M4

However, in terms of creating an atmosphere in the interior, the Traveler is stronger than the M4. This is mainly due to Jietu’s application of a larger area of soft filling materials. The M4 may be limited by cost and has used many hard plastic components. Although it can support the M4’s tough style, the hard interior still affects the comfort. On the other hand, the Traveler has added soft materials to the center console and door handles, making it more comfortable overall.

The same issue also appears in the configuration of the vehicles. Both models are equipped with the latest 8155 chip. However, as a model with a starting price of 165,800 yuan, the configuration of the Haval M4 102 Exploration Edition is a bit lacking. It not only does not provide common configurations in domestic cars such as 360-degree panoramic imaging, adaptive cruise control, and electric adjustment for the front passenger seat, but also only has 4 speakers. What is more unexpected is that it has reduced some safety configurations, such as removing the front and rear side curtain airbags, which is really unacceptable.

Even in the case of being the top configuration models and having a price difference of only 1,100 yuan, the M4 still has some gaps compared to the Traveler in terms of configuration. For example, automatic parking, heated/cooled cup holder, massaging function for the driver’s seat, colorful ambient lighting, 220V power supply in the trunk, and better Sony sound system. The Traveler also has more sensors and stronger driving assistance functions. If the M4 wants to have the above-mentioned configurations, it still needs to choose the optional package for 10,000 yuan to experience them.

Although it does not have an advantage in terms of configuration, the Haval M6 is much stronger in terms of power compared to the Jetour Traveler. The M6 adopts Great Wall’s Hi4 electric four-wheel drive technology, so all models come standard with four-wheel drive. In terms of power parameters, the M6 is equipped with a 1.5T hybrid dedicated engine + motor + battery power combination, matched with a 2-speed DHT hybrid dedicated gearbox, with a comprehensive power of 278 kW (282 kW for the top version) and a comprehensive torque of 750 N·m, which is sufficient for an SUV model that focuses on light off-road driving.

Haval M6 power

In comparison, the Jetour Traveler, which uses pure fuel drive, lags behind in terms of comprehensive power. It offers two engine options: 1.5T and 2.0T. The maximum power of the 1.5T engine is 135 kW, and the maximum torque is 290 N·m, while the maximum power of the 2.0T engine is 187 kW, and the maximum torque is 390 N·m. It is equipped with a 7-speed wet dual-clutch transmission (8-speed AT transmission for the top version).

Jetour Traveler 2.0T engine

Due to the addition of the hybrid system, the M6 also provides two types of pure electric range under NEDC conditions: 102 km and 145 km. In addition, with the addition of the battery, the vehicle also supports a maximum 3.3 kW external power output function, which can provide power to some electrical appliances during camping, a function that the Traveler cannot provide. Similarly, due to the addition of the hybrid system, the vehicle’s performance in terms of energy consumption is also more excellent, with a longer range than the Traveler.

Due to the need to face the demand for light off-road, the chassis and off-road related functions of the vehicles have become very important in these two models. Both models offer four-wheel drive versions and rear axle differential locks, but the Haval M4 requires an additional 6000 yuan to be tied to the camping light option. Both models adopt front MacPherson independent suspension and rear multi-link independent suspension, and neither is equipped with a beam, so they can’t be considered as true hardcore off-road models.

Haval M4 Electric 4WD

JETOUR Traveler Full-automatic Intelligent 4WD

In terms of passability, the minimum ground clearance of the Haval M4 is 200mm, the maximum wading depth is 560mm, the approach angle is 24 degrees, and the departure angle is 30 degrees. It also has 7 driving modes including snow and sand. The minimum ground clearance of the JETOUR Traveler is 220mm, the maximum wading depth is 700mm, the approach angle is 28 degrees, and the departure angle is also 28 degrees. It is also equipped with BorgWarner’s sixth-generation intelligent torque manager, which can better distribute the torque of the front and rear axles. In terms of passability, the JETOUR Traveler has a slight advantage.

Finally, and most importantly, is the vehicle price. If we only look at the official prices, the JETOUR Traveler has a lower starting price, offering 1.5T and 2.0T power versions as well as 6 models with both 2WD and 4WD, with prices ranging from 139,900 yuan to 184,900 yuan. The Haval M4 comes standard with electric 4WD and only offers 3 models, with prices ranging from 165,800 to 183,800 yuan. However, considering that the Traveler, as a pure fuel vehicle, still needs to pay a certain amount of purchase tax, the actual on-road price difference between the two will be further reduced.

Haval M4 Price

Jietu Traveler Price

After reading the whole article, you should have a certain understanding of the two models. They have their own advantages and disadvantages in different aspects. If you value the comfort of the vehicle and need higher configurations, Jietu Traveler may be more suitable for you. If you have a demand for power and green license plates, then Haval M4 clearly has the advantage. Of course, if you just need a city SUV that looks more rugged, the lower-priced 1.5T two-wheel drive Traveler can meet your requirements.

In addition, there is news that the Jietu Traveler, which is also equipped with hybrid technology, is already under testing and may be launched in the near future, but its price is likely to be more expensive than the fuel version. However, no matter who you choose, it is best to go to a local 4S dealership for a test drive experience before making a decision. After all, “paper can’t replace practical experience”.
