Xiao Zhou scores again! Zhou Guanyu finishes 9th in F1 Qatar Grand Prix, Verstappen wins
【Phoneauto News】 In the early morning of October 9th, 2023, the F1 Qatar Grand Prix of the 2023 season came to an end. Max Verstappen, who had just been crowned the 2023 F1 Driver of the Year the day before, once again won the championship without any surprises. McLaren’s duo, who had performed well in the sprint race, also stepped onto the podium again. It is worth mentioning that the Alfa Romeo team’s Bottas and Zhou Guanyu finished in eighth and ninth place respectively and scored points.

This race was full of surprises from the very beginning. At the first corner of the race, Verstappen occupied the inside line, giving Hamilton a chance to pass on the outside. As a result, Hamilton did not leave enough space for his teammate Russell when overtaking, causing Russell to directly collide with Hamilton and forcing the latter to retire. Russell also went to the repair area at the back of the field due to vehicle damage. After the race, Hamilton tweeted, admitting that the main responsibility for this accident lies with himself, and he apologized to his team and Russell.

In this race, the FIA introduced new regulations, requiring the maximum cumulative usage of new tires to not exceed 18 laps. This means that all teams have to make at least three pit stops, which also puts high demands on the tire changing crews of each team. However, the previously slow Alfa Romeo team performed exceptionally well this time. In the 18th lap, Zhou Guanyu made a pit stop to change tires, and the Alfa Romeo crew achieved an outstanding time of 2.7 seconds, which gave Zhou Guanyu a good opportunity. In the 35th lap, after Verstappen made a pit stop, Zhou Guanyu became the only driver on the track who had only made one stop. Then, in the 36th lap, Zhou Guanyu completed his pit stop, and his time of 2.8 seconds once again earned praise from the commentator of Wuxing Sports.

Due to the hot climate at the race venue in Qatar, even the night temperature exceeded 30 degrees, which posed a very tough physical challenge for the drivers. Due to the high temperature inside the cockpit, Sargent retired after 41 laps due to discomfort. Other drivers, including Perez, Albon, and Stroll, also made frequent mistakes by going off track and received time penalties, which provided a chance for Zhou Guanyu to enter the points zone in the end. In the end, Verstappen still secured the championship, with McLaren duo Piastri and Norris finishing second and third respectively. Bottas and Zhou Guanyu also finished in the top ten, in eighth and ninth place respectively.
