Xiaomi’s booming OS is connecting Android+Vela’s unified ecosystem for people, cars, and homes.

Xiaomi's Flourishing Operating System Unites Android and Vela's Integrated Ecosystem for Individuals, Cars, and Residences

[Mobile China] According to the old Chinese calendar, October 17th is the 3rd day of the 9th lunar month, which is auspicious for starting a business, planting, and laying foundations. In the tech industry, it’s also a big day as Baidu World 2023, themed “Prompt the World,” officially takes place. The fourth edition of Wenxin Yiyuan is unveiled, and domestic manufacturers take another step towards becoming world-class. At the same time, Xiaomi’s founder, Lei Jun, has made a major announcement – Xiaomi HyperOS is in the works, and the Xiaomi 14 series will be the first smartphone to feature it.

Xiaomi HyperOS Connecting Android+Vela Unified Human-Vehicle-Home Ecosystem

Before Lei Jun’s official announcement, the industry speculated that Xiaomi’s new system would be called MIOS, and it received high praise. However, for Xiaomi, it seems this wasn’t the best choice. The Chinese name for Xiaomi’s new operating system is Xiaomi Pengpai OS, with the English name being Xiaomi HyperOS – meant for those who understand the deeper meaning. “Pengpai” (meaning surging) holds great significance for Xiaomi. They named their self-developed SoC Pengpai, but it encountered difficulties. Later, they introduced Pengpai batteries and self-developed charging chips. These products are now gaining attention and passing market tests. Rooted in self-development, Xiaomi’s surging spirit never stops. Surging is not only about chips; it’s also about a new operating system. In the future, there may be even more.

In the official announcement, Lei Jun mentioned that Xiaomi HyperOS will gradually replace MIUI. The Xiaomi 14 series has already entered production at the factory, marking the end of MIUI’s decade-long journey. The brand new Xiaomi HyperOS will take on the burden from MIUI and embark on a key leap in the human-vehicle-home ecosystem. At this moment, not only is Lei Jun excited, but countless Xiaomi fans and the industry as a whole are also surging with excitement.

Lei Jun introduced that Xiaomi HyperOS is based on the deeply evolved Android and the self-developed Vela system, completely rewriting the underlying architecture. It has created a public foundation for the future of billions of devices and billions of connections, making everything interconnected. This is a massive engineering system. Many people are familiar with Android, but what is Vela?

At the 2020 Xiaomi Developer Conference, Xiaomi announced its Internet of Things operating system, Vela. Van Dian, the General Manager of Xiaomi IoT Platform Division and Chairman of the AIoT Strategic Committee, introduced Vela as a IoT software platform built on the open-source embedded operating system NuttX. This shows that Xiaomi’s Pangolin OS integrates the strengths of Android and Vela, ultimately connecting people, cars, and homes to achieve Xiaomi’s grand ecological vision.

With MIUI coming to a close, most domestic smartphone manufacturers have successfully transitioned from UI to OS. Huawei has transitioned from EMUI to HarmonyOS, Vivo from OriginOS, OPPO from ColorOS, and Honor from MagicUI to MagicOS. The transformation of the OS goes beyond a simple change in UI to OS naming. It represents the strategic layout of major manufacturers in the direction of the Internet of Things. No one wants to miss out on this wave of the era. Of course, more directly, it is difficult to stand at the forefront without becoming a leader. Smartphones are gradually weakening their central position, and the “N” in the Internet of Things is becoming the protagonist. Xiaomi’s layout of people, cars, and homes as a complete ecosystem will be officially formed with the implementation of Xiaomi Pangolin OS and Xiaomi cars.

Zhang Guoquan, the Director of Xiaomi’s Mobile System Software Department, said that the OS is a super large and complex system engineering project that requires immeasurable investment and perseverance. Technologically, from app optimization, framework reconstruction to underlying architecture rewriting; in terms of the ecosystem, from interconnecting two devices to controlling and transferring multiple devices, and finally to the ecosystem of people, cars, and homes; and investment-wise, it requires thousands of technical experts and over 10 years of continuous technological research and development and accumulation.

In Lei Jun’s article, he mentioned a very important group – 100 dream sponsors. The first version of MIUI was initially tested by only 100 users. These 100 people who were early supporters of Xiaomi are called dream sponsors. It is because of their support that Xiaomi Pangolin OS exists today. From the initial 100 dream sponsors to the current global cumulative total of 1.175 billion users, and from the first version with only 4 commonly used functions to the deep framework of cross-platform interconnection, MIUI has always pursued the most user-friendly and humane system experience. Lei Jun revealed that Xiaomi has been preparing for Xiaomi Pangolin OS for a long time. In 2014, when Xiaomi’s IoT business began to take shape, Xiaomi started exploratory development and verification. In 2017, the development of the new system officially began, unifying and supporting the entire ecosystem of devices and applications with an integrated system framework. This is Xiaomi’s pursuit.

Xiaomi Surge OS+ Xiaomi 14 series, the remaining two months of 2023 will be a true Xiaomi moment, especially the Xiaomi 14 series, which is likely to be released around the Singles’ Day. This will significantly boost sales, as long as the production capacity keeps up, there’s no need to worry about sales. Currently, there isn’t much exposure about Xiaomi Surge OS, but based on the preparations of various companies, it will mainly focus on UI fluidity, performance, connectivity, and security. Xiaomi Surge OS is no exception, it’s just a matter of how far Xiaomi can take it, which is worth looking forward to.

As for the Xiaomi 14 series, there have already been many leaks. In addition to being the first with Xiaomi Surge OS, it will also bring Snapdragon 8GEN3, the new generation Leica optical lens, and more. Whether it’s the appearance, imaging capabilities, or performance, there will be a huge improvement. It is a crucial work for Xiaomi to stabilize the high-end market during Huawei’s return to the mobile phone market.

With the landing of Xiaomi Surge OS, Xiaomi’s layout in terms of the system has also demonstrated its determination in the field of Internet of Things globally. From this moment on, we need to know that Xiaomi Surge OS will not only be used on smartphones, but also on other products such as tablets, smartwatches, and TVs that Xiaomi will introduce in the future. They will all be injected with the soul of Xiaomi Surge OS. It is a foundation for Xiaomi to build a world of interconnected devices and an ideal paradise for domestic manufacturers.
